Implementing a Spatial Awareness Curriculum in Schools in Morogoro, Tanzania:
A Pilot Study Examining the Effectiveness of Using the Pattern ABC System in a Low-Income Country

To research the deliverability of spatial skill building exercises in a low resource environment, na2ure received funding from the Radius Foundation in 2018. The team built a testable set of 9 patterns with 4 activities each, to be tested in over 400 3-6 year old students in Morogoro, Tanzania, in a protocol built by Dr. Charlotte Cole, and Dr. Dina Borzekowski of U Maryland and her team from the School of Public Health.
The standards used for the pilot were devised with the UNICEF team for Early Childhood Development, and folllowed standards of their MELQO testing for UN SDG 4.6 for preschool teaching. The results showed children’s ability in pattern recognition to be not only a distinct buildable skill by means of the activities, but also a skill which has relevance to their school readiness in learning letters and numbers. The success of the pilot led to na2ure designing a second pilot for 2020, postponed by the pandemic to 2021.
